Overview
Beginning in January 2023, NobleReach and NSF partnered on a pilot to test two ideas: that translation can strengthen and focus discovery across the biological sciences without inhibiting its intrinsic scientific value, and that it is never too early to engage a researcher in translation. NobleReach and NSF identified and supported 11 Principal Investigators with bespoke guidance and support throughout the yearlong pilot.
Key Findings:
- It’s never too early to explore translation options.
- The translation pathway is specific to each technology.
- There is no one set path to translate research translation. There are a range of positive outcomes – from successful commercial startups to nonprofits to new institutes – that can inspire researchers and stakeholders such as university sponsors, students and investors.
- Translation activities are not at odds with the pursuit of discovery research. Basic research is the fuel for translation and the two can be pursued in tandem.
- Seasoned business expertise is critical to moving the most impactful technologies beyond the lab to fulfill their positive potential.
